Three-year Jubilee

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Emma was so excited the eve of her birthday that she managed to stay awake till 11:00pm. She battled the forces of sleep with animated discussions of cake, candles and Aunt Julie’s imminent arrival, and then woke shortly before 6:00am, quivering with anticipation. She managed to contain her self for a little while, allowing Christine and me cursory showers and the luxury of clean clothes, but before 8 she had opened her first present, a new backpack a la mode penguin.

A fall at school blacked her eye but couldn’t cloud her mood. There were more presents—two (2) fun sprinklers to ward away the loathsome heat of the Philadelphia summer, new dresses, new books, tattoos—and a homemade cake with real chocolate frosting. Emma’s friend FZA (version 2.0) joined us for the coronation ceremony and cake.

Our eager, regal, brilliant daughter Emma is three.

It really is a goat rodeo around here, complete with e. coli-laden saliva. Fortunately, we are well-versed in effective hand-washing technique.

Did you know that the Philadelphia Zoo was America’s first zoo? Did you know that the Romans called zebras “hippotigris”? Do you know the muffin man? Aunt Julie does.

L’Année

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Emma is one year old as of 9:25pm this evening. We celebrated early, of course, with a red velvet cupcake which Emma swiftly determined was not, in fact, food. (Flaw: too red to be bread.)

Red velvet is for classy tuxedos, not for eating

She’s running all over the place now, as sure as ever that she can climb the stairs, carry the heaviest object in the room, and discuss diverse and diverting subjects over the phone with her aunt. She’s a threshold toddler, and she seems to flash a new facet of her emerging personality every day. Lately she’s taken to roving through the living room, turning on a dime and rushing back to one of us, laughing, then departing for a brief moment of repose on the first step of the stairs, after which she thrills her adoring public with an encore performance.

None shall pass

She’s brilliant.

Her eyes follow you wherever you stand in the room.

Christmas Eve – Part I

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Just a few days before Christmas, Emma began enthusiastically ripping any paper we gave her, which made for an easy transition to unwrapping gifts with Christine’s family. The tearing impulse is powerful, of course, but the tasting instinct easily overmasters it. And what does ruby metallic wrapping paper taste like? Arby’s.

It tastes like...ruby rollups

is a long time to be out in this world, and Emma is adjusting quite well. She’s finding her voice, especially in the mornings when she entertains us with very loud accounts of the previous evening’s activities. Last weekend she visited with Aunt Julie, who was in town for the football game and was not disappointed (everyone needs a win now and then).

Aunt Julie

There may not be any pots, pans, or other mischief-making tools in this photograph but do not be fooled; Aunt Julie is just waiting to wreak havoc upon our otherwise peaceful existence.

p.s. I like the way the flash makes it seem as though Emma has a blonde mohawk. She does not. Also, notice the olive complexion I referenced in my last post.
